About the Central Region

In the bustling city of Chicago, Illinois, Lola M. Parker founded Iota Phi Lambda Sorority on June 1, 1929. She established Alpha Chapter as the first of what would become a network of chapters dedicated to empowering women through education and community service. Recognizing the need for formal organization, the sorority was officially incorporated as Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. on September 30, 1930.

Decades later, in a pivotal moment for the organization, the Northern and Western Regions merged into what would be known as the Central Region. This historic event unfolded during a momentous weekend from April 25th to 27th, 1980, in Toledo, Ohio. The merger was not without its challenges, but with careful planning and workshops held in Indianapolis, Indiana, objections were smoothed over, ensuring a seamless transition.

Following the merger, the Central Region found itself under the capable leadership of two Co-Regional Directors, Mary L. Oakes of Alpha Iota and Dorothy J. Williams of Alpha Beta. Their joint stewardship ushered in a new era of growth and unity within the sorority.

Today, the Central Region remains a cornerstone of the sorority's legacy. Spanning across thirteen states—Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin—the region continues to thrive. It proudly hosts 12 active chapters spread across five states, each contributing to the sorority’s mission and values.

The Central Region also holds a distinguished lineage of National Presidents, including Marcella Morrison, Stephanie Dilworth, and Dorothy White, whose contributions have shaped the sorority's direction and impact. Their leadership serves as inspiration for members across the region, fostering a community where educational and professional achievements are celebrated.

Residents of these states are warmly invited to explore membership opportunities or consider establishing new chapters, continuing the tradition of empowerment and service that Lola M. Parker envisioned nearly a century ago in the heart of Chicago.
