NATIONAL HONORARY SOROR

Dr. Blondean Davis(2013)

Dr. Davis is a former Chief of Schools and Regions of the Chicago Public Schools who now serves as Superintendent of Matteson District 162 and CEO of Southland College Prep Charter High School in Richton Park.

She left Chicago Public Schools in 2002 to become superintendent of south suburban Matteson Elementary School District 162. The predominantly black, high-poverty district defied conventional education wisdom with soaring test scores and a national award under Davis’ administration. In 2010, Davis helped spearhead the launch of the first charter in south suburban Chicago: Southland College Prep, which will serve graduating 8th-graders from District 162. The charter fought a successful battle against Rich Township High School District 227, a relatively low-performing district that tried to block the school and argued that it would drain resources and students. Southland opened in late August 2010 with its first class of 125 freshmen. Dr. Davis serves as the charter’s unpaid CEO, reporting directly to the Illinois State Board of Education. Southland offers a longer school day—typical of many charter schools—requires every student to take four years of a foreign language, provides tutoring and student activities after school and includes daily common planning time for teachers.

In 2013, Tougaloo College, one of the premier historically black colleges in the U.S., awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Dr. Blondean Davis.   In addition to her many contributions to primary, elementary and secondary education, Dr. Davis was cited by Tougaloo College’s trustees for her tireless work on behalf of the United Negro College Fund, a cause for which she has raised more than $ 8 million.

Dr. Davis is sponsored by Alpha Chapter of the Central Region.
