Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Celebrates the Life of Rep. John Lewis

john-lewisWe, the National Executive Board of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporation and our membership offer our sincere condolences to the family and constitutes of Representative John Lewis, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Civil Rights Leader and best-selling author.

As a survivor of the voting-rights march in Alabama that became known as “Bloody Sunday,” Representative Lewis will always be remembered as the “Conscience of the United States Congress”, continually working on issues of justice and equality, fighting to preserve the sanctity of the vote for all Americans.  He was known as a believer of nonviolence, but could be heard to say, “we need to start some good trouble”.  We will always remember this giant of a man who spent his life fighting for social justice.

In 2011, he was awarded the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Barack Obama, for his life’s work as a congressman and civil rights leader.  His comic book novel, “March”, the story of his life in the civil rights movement, won the National Book Award for children’s literature in 2016.

We, and the world will forever remember Representative John Lewis, the last surviving member of the March of Washington and a man of integrity, compassion and dignity.

23rd National President
